BIOGRAPHY OF AS SHEIK BABA OLOMIGBONA
As-sheikh Baba Olomigbona is an original scholar, mentor, humble and a gentle man. Indeed he is a man of high repute and blessed with good character. Allah blessed him with many children and they are all great. This is alone is a blessing among the blessing of the Greatest Lord.
1.1 His Personality
He is Alhaji Muhammad Ballo Yusuf Baba Olomigbona, one of the unmatched Scholars that their names glistened and their personalities stood out in Ilorin and Nigeria as a whole in mid century till date. Indeed, he has witnessed many big Success.
1.2 His Birth
He was born on the 3rd of May, 1940 A.D, in Olorire Compound, Alore, Ilorin to Mallam Yusuf (Saromi)
1.3 His Education
As sheik Baba Olomigbona started his quranic learning at the school of As sheik Bushrah who was a son to Alfa Alore in Alore from 1947-1956.
He then continued his Idadiyyah which last for seven years at Madrasat Sheikh Muhammad Thanni ( at ile Alfa Banni). He never stopped there, he continued seeking Arabic and Islamic Knowledge by attending another school called Madrasatul Al-Adabiyatul Islamiyyah, Abata Asunkere, for his Thannawiyyah (Senior Islamic School) between 1963-1968 from his third Teacher As- sheikh Alhaji Abdur Raheem Aminullahi Oniwasi Agbaye. Among his contemporaries during that time is As-sheikh Jubril Imam Sha'aban, the proprietor of Muhyideen College of Education, Kulende, Ilorin.
His Impact in Education
He thrived with all his efforts and resources to make himself ready for all the challenge in disseminating Islamic Knowledge most especially in Sharia (Islamic Ruling). He is known for being a great reader to the extend that he mastered Arabic language and its culture. He achieved many great success in his thrive in knowledge dissemination. He established an Arabic School of his own I.e Al-Adabiyyat As-sa'eediyyat Olomigbona in 1973 A.D. He was blessed with students who are hardworking, diligent in study and ready to serve in the course of Islam.
His Islamic Da'wah
He has an extended reach in his way of calling people to Islam since he is in a complex route. He does not afraid anyone nor anything but Allah. And he frequently used to say " Therefore declare openly what you are bidden and turn aside from polytheists" (Q:15:94). He has an appealing mode of calling people to Islam and make Prophet (Muhammad) his role model and Qurian Kareem his instrument.
THE REASON WHY HE WAS NAMED OLOMIGBONA
It was reported by Alh. Baba Olomigbona that on Friday, 23rd of April, 1965 he gave a sermon at Oke mapo mosque and departed on the 24th of April, 1965, when he was attacked by six traditional worshipers (Onishaki) and accused him of having his cap and turban on his head. These people tried to beat him with enchanted canes but he overcome them with the power of Almighty Allah and asked them to fight one another. And then he left. He added that the Imam of the mosque at oke mapo where he had already preached the oneness of God before the incident reported the situation to the then Baale of the area and the Baale asked people to find Alfa Olomigbona. When he appeared at the scene, the Baale begged him to release the six Onishaki. Alfa Olomigbona asked for hot water and it was brought to him by a woman he recited some some Quranic verses and asked someone to give those Onishaki a teaspoon of the hot water so that they will be released from the calamity they brought upon themselves. The Baale deeply thanked Alfa Olomigbona and he warned the Onishaki to be cautioned in their activities and added that this Alfa is from Ilorin, he did not know that when people meet Onishaki, they should remove their cap or turban.
Later when he returned to the oke mapo when he was coming back from his dawah tour he met the Baale who had asked people to lookout for him. And they didn't even know his name and so they decided to call him Alfa Olomigbona. And when he met the Baale the Baale also addressed him as Alfa Olomigbona. That was how he got his name as Alfa Olomigbona.
He continued his da'wah and was selected by World Islamic Missionary ( Saudi Arabia Headquarter) Society. And work for this society for about twenty eight years instead of twenty five years which is permissible. But Alfa Olomigbona was given additional years of service because of his great impact. He preached oneness of Allah in Yoruba land and its environ. And nothing less than two thousand polytheists revert to Islam through him in many different places. He is known for being humble and patience until he become a model among Scholars and students. He has asceticism (abstinence from worldly material). He used to correct people in a good manner and does not condemn.
The Olomigbona area where he was hail in Ilorin is just a coincidence. This is the fact about his nickname (Olomigbona). May Allah preserve him for us and make his ending a beautiful one. Aamin
